Ready or not here we come, Holidays!  My brain can't go there yet so this newsletter we are highlighting some fun, family events, a NEW contest, and highlight an non-profit organization that provides assistance to local families who's children are battling cancer - The Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation.

Below is their mission statement, a link to their site, and information about the Koala Club - a club our kids can join that provide them with volunteer opportunities.  Right now they are looking for a few donations - so if you find yourself not needing a baby item anymore or are able to donate in other ways reach out to them directly and they will gladly accept your donation.

As we prepare for the Holidays this year, I hope we can all look for ways to give back to others who are in need.

Finding Issues That Matter to You

You’re more likely to volunteer and keep volunteering if you find issues and projects that matter to you. For example, one family with teenagers was interested in technology. They liked taking photographs, working with soundboards, and doing video editing. They volunteered for a nonprofit organization that needed this type of assistance. Another family with young children helped out at an animal shelter once a month because everyone in the family loved cats and dogs.

  • Identify your family’s areas of interest. Talk to your family and determine which issues you are interested in and which activities you would like to engage in. Are you most concerned about low-income people, senior citizens, refugees, or homeless individuals? Or is your family more passionate about caring for abandoned animals or the environment?
  • It can be helpful to try a few different types of service or volunteering. Decide together the types of things you would like to try once, and start with those. Be sure to choose projects that allow every family member, regardless of age, to contribute in a meaningful way.
  • Actively involve children in choosing and planning service projects. Pay attention to what interests them and what they seem most concerned about, as those are areas in which they are likely to invest more energy. Give them responsibilities that match their abilities and interests.
  • Start looking for opportunities where you already have connections. For example, you may find appropriate family activities through a faith community (church, mosque, synagogue, temple, or other religious organization), workplace, or community or service organization.
  • If you have friends or family members who volunteer regularly, ask them if your family can join them sometime. Talk with other families about whether they would like to do something together.

Serving others as a family has many benefits, including setting a very good example for your children. Getting involved in a cause that your family feels strongly about will make it much easier to continue your service for many years to come.

Non-Profit Highlight - The Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation

THE TEDDY BEAR CANCER FOUNDATION

Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation Mission Statement: The mission of the Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation is to ensure that children with cancer receive the undivided comfort of their parents during the treatment and recovery process. We achieve this by providing middle to low-income families with financial aid for rent, mortgage, utilities, and car payments, as well as other supportive services, thereby allowing families to focus on what is truly important – their children.

PARENTS - Looking for a way to get your kids involved??  Join Koala Club!

This fun and new club is for all you kids and teens who want to give back. Kids want to help other kids and given the opportunity you can really make a difference. There is something very comforting and supportive to a child going through treatment for cancer to know that their peers and kids they have never met and may never meet want to help.

Well...now is your chance. The Koala Club is for kids 16 and under. Become a member on your own, with a group of friends, kids groups, get your class involved or even your school. Anyone can join!

To become a member all you need to do is think of ways to help. Here are just a few examples of things other kids have already done.

• Bake sale, Lemonade stands, car washes, rummage sales, make cards for children in the hospital, jewelry with supportive messages on them like "Beads of Hope", coin drives and much more.

See what our Charter Koala Club Members are doing:

~ Whitney, Ashley, Emily, Gabrielle & Zachary made and sold cupcakes at a Hot Lava Concert by walking around with trays of cupcakes to raise money and awareness for kids with cancer and over $190.

~ Nicoletta & Josh have been volunteering at event for the last two years painting faces, playing Santa's elves at Christmas and making a one on one difference with some of our families,

~ Laguna Blanca Upper School's Makenzie and Makenzie took it upon themselves to get their peers excited about Teddy Bear and have created their own fundraising club. Their first fundraiser was a Jog-a-thon where they raised over $200. We can't wait to see what they have in store for the Koala Club next.
