Do you have plans for a family vacation this summer? We are about to embark on an extended trip with our two young boys...my mind is spinning thinking about all of the STUFF I need to pack and remember to bring.  I am wondering how we will survive the 5 hour plane ride or the many lines at the airport.  I do think the crawling and toddler stage tends to be the most difficult. As babies, they sleep and can be comforted with a bottle and as they get older, there are many ways to entertain kids. For those of you wondering when the right time to travel is, it is NOW! There is never a perfect time and your kids are never a perfect age. Just take plenty of supplies, get as many tips as you can from seasoned travelers and pack up the kids and go.

(BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) travelig_girl2.jpgPLANNING & PACKING... One key to a successful trip comes in the preparation and planning stages. If you are a list maker, now is the time to jot down the items you would like to take while keeping in mind the type of trip you are taking (beach vacation, visiting family and friends, etc), flying or driving, how long is the trip, etc. Just remember... plenty of diapers, change of clothes, activities and lots of snacks!!!  Visit our Travel Section can help you locate local resources and features a variety of TRAVEL TIPS including how to pack.

AIRLINE TRAVEL... If you are flying, many airlines are now charging extra fees for checked bags so travelers are trying to pack more efficiently and stick to carry-ons when possible. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) publishes guidelines for travelers. Liquids and gels still have restrictions when they are packed in a carry-on. Each passenger is allowed one quart-sized zip-top clear bag with as many 3.4 ounce bottles (or smaller) of liquids or gels that fit into the one bag. Remember, your kids are passengers, too, so they can have their own carry-ons and their zip-top bag as well. Some changes have been made to the rules regarding flying with formula, breast milk and food so visit the TSA website for the latest information.

Maybe a STAYCATION is what you have planned this year. Staycations offer an affordable way to take time off and there is NO PACKING involved! The Southern California area provides us so with many choices and places to explore.  For ideas, make sure to check out our Tourist/Locals Overview and the Family & Tourist Attractions pages.  Here are a few day trip ideas:  Nojoqui Falls -- Lake Casitas Recreation Area  --  The Ravine Waterpark in Paso Robles --  Los Angeles Zoo --  PCPA Theaterfest in Solvang

(BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) Beach_Sunblock.jpgSUNSCREEN TIPS... Regardless if you are staying in town or traveling out of town, don't forget to protect yourself from the sun! Kids are more vulnerable to sun damage and a few blistering sunburns in childhood can double a person's lifetime chances of developing serious forms of skin cancer. The best sunscreen is a hat and shirt. After that, protect kids with a sunscreen that's effective and safe. I know that when spray sunscreens first came out, I was thrilled and immediately thought I would switch our family to the spray-types for our sun protection. We noticed that we were all getting slightly burned even when heavily sprayed and we have now switched back to lotion-type sunscreen. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has released their 2010 sunscreen guide in which EWG researchers recommend only 39 out of of 500 beach and sport sunscreens on the market this season. EWG says many sunscreens do not adequately protect your skin from both UVA (which causes premature aging, skin cancer, and other skin damage) and UVB (which causes sunburn) rays. Plus, several products contain questionable chemicals. The easiest way to find sunscreens that are safe and effective is to use EWG's database, which has ratings on over 1,400 products from lotions and sprays to lip balms, moisturizers, and makeup with sun protection.

We wish you safe and happy travels this summer. CONGRATULATIONS to all of the graduates!!!

Plan A Family Vacation Everyone Can Enjoy. Really.

When I used to travel I always found it a bit humorous to observe little ones with their parents. The kids were bored out of their minds, complaining and pouting. It was pretty safe to assume no one was having fun. Could these have just been snap shots of particularly bad points in the whole trip? Maybe. But more than likely the kids were dragged along whining and pouting with the promise of ice cream at the end of the day of sight seeing.

Well, now I have kids. The above scenario is no longer that humorous. I think about travelling with our kids and like every other parent out there I think: "That will never happen to us. We're cool, we'll go to cool places and we'll do cool things". But here's what I'm realizing as I grow older: Cool is all relative.

Here are some ways that you can make your next family holiday planning session less stressful and end up with a holiday everyone enjoys. You may even avoid the whining and pouting altogether.

1. Choose the destination as a group. Pull out a map of your state, province, territory, country or neighbouring country. The time you have and budget constraints will largely dictate the type of holiday your family can have and how far you can venture from home. Let everyone have a say in where they'd like to go and why. Research the suggested places online or at the library and see what each has to offer. If you want to form a tradition of only visiting a place once, set that expectation early on. Decide on the most appropriate destination as a group. Keeping in mind the ages, likes and dislikes of all travelers. Make sure everyone is heard and that concerns aren't just quickly dismissed.

2. Hand over the planning. If you have kids, and they are old enough, allow them to do most of the planning. Not only can you use it as a teaching opportunity for booking hotels, cars, and finding activities, it'll likely ensure complete buy-in from your kids. If you have teenagers they may find a family vacation more enjoyable if they are able to invite a friend along. Talk with them and discuss your options. Think win-win when finalizing details.

3. What to do? Once you've decided on a destination research what family activities are available. Is there an amusement park that has something for everyone? Do you all enjoy theatre, movies or museums? If so, it should be relatively easy to plan your days. However, it's unlikely you will all have the same interests. An alternate approach is to take turns choosing activities and there are two ways to do this:

1. You can assign certain days to certain people and leave it entirely up to them as to what you do on that day.
2. You can take turns throughout the day suggesting activities.

I prefer this second option as it appeases everyone throughout the day. Each person has something to look forward to for the day.

4. Don't overdo it. Most of us go on vacation to relax, spend quality time together and experience different customs, food, and people. It's important, however, not to overdo it. Planning too many activities each day can be stressful and extremely tiring, especially for young kids. Plan to have some mornings, afternoons or days even with nothing planned. Use these times to relax take in the scenery of where you are, sleep in, enjoy a long brunch. Slow down and take it all in. A holiday doesn't need to be go go go all the time to be fulfilling.

A family holiday is a great way to reconnect with your loved ones. It doesn't have to cost a lot of money and it doesn't need to be three weeks somewhere 10, 000 miles away. These ideas have helped take the stress out of our family vacation planning. We all have fun and come back feeling relaxed and refreshed.
